Is a VPN worth it for small businesses? When it makes sense to use one
A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and the internet, hiding your real IP address and protecting the data transmitted from prying eyes on the same network. It's not magic, it's encryption applied to your connection.
When it makes sense for a small business
- Employees who access company systems on public Wi-Fi (airports, cafes, coworking spaces)
- Remote teams who need to securely access internal files or systems
- Businesses that handle sensitive customer data and want an extra layer of traffic protection
When it's NOT a priority
If the whole team works only from the office, on its own trusted network, and doesn't access sensitive systems from outside, a VPN becomes more of an expense than a real security need — in that case, other practices (strong passwords, backup, system updates) give a better return on investment.
Free or paid VPN?
Free VPNs often have speed or data limits, or even resell browsing information as a way to monetize — for business use, it's worth considering a paid service with a clear privacy policy, even if the monthly cost is low.
