Why your website is slow (and how to test it for free)
A site that takes more than 3 seconds to load already loses a good chunk of visitors before it even shows the content — and Google also uses speed as a search ranking factor. In other words: a slow site costs you customers two ways, direct and indirect.
The most common causes
- Very heavy, uncompressed images loaded at full original size
- Low-quality shared hosting, overloaded with other sites
- Too many plugins or third-party scripts (chats, pixels, widgets) loading at once
- Site built on a generic platform not optimized for the page's actual content
- No caching, forcing the server to rebuild the page from scratch on every visit
How to test your site's speed for free
Google's PageSpeed Insights (free) shows your site's performance score on mobile and desktop, and points out exactly what's weighing it down — usually images and scripts. It's worth running the test on your site and comparing it with a direct competitor's to get a real sense of the difference.
What to do with the result
If the problem is images, compressing them before uploading already solves a good part of it. If it's hosting or site structure, the fix usually requires something deeper — sometimes rebuilding the site from scratch on a lighter structure pays off more than patching what already exists.
